Got arguments?

I often wonder why people argue...

How often have you seen two people argue about a topic / issue vehemently and not reach any conclusion? At the end, X sticks to his point of view and Y sticks to his POV. The conversation is just an exercise by both parties to state why they believe in what they do. If the protagonists' POVs do change, it either implies they did not truly believe in what they were rooting for or that their POV was intrinsically flimsy.

Of course, you could argue (here we go again) that the point of the argument is not to convince the other party, but, in the spirit of democracy, put forth views for public consumption and that this healthy exchange of ideas and facts helps us understand the world a little better.

What do you think?
